In Princeton we huddled in the Hinds Library (located in the basement) and parsed Coventry Patmore’s 1857 English Metrical Law as well as a few of Patmore’s poems. We also read Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Philosophy of Composition” (1846) and “Rationale of Verse.” There may have been mention of “Ulalume,” and we tested Patmore’s theories on sections of his own “Unknown Eros,” as well as freaked out over the discovery of these Youtube videos.
